Schools Wellness Mobiles
Project Description
The Health Foundation is the support partner to the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness on the Schools Wellness Mobiles, a programme to reduce public health-related barriers to learning through mobile clinics.
The Schools Wellness Mobiles programme is part of the Integrated School Health Programme which was designed to foster sustained positive health outcomes for learners and their communities in the Western Cape.
Goals/Outcomes
The Schools Wellness Mobiles are equipped with appropriate medical equipment and staffed by trained and skilled health workers to support the Integrated School Health Programme by:
- Screening learners within the context of an improved referral and follow-up system.
- Providing preventative procedures and health education to learners.
- Carrying out dental, eye, and other minor treatments to learners.
- Providing a range of interventions to the general population in hard-to-reach areas.
Services

Primary Health Care
- Immunisation and deworming updates
- Weight measurements
- Eye, ear and throat screenings
- Testing gross and fine motor skills
- Screening for skin-related and other problems

Optometry
- Vision screening followed by comprehensive eye tests
- Spectacle dispensing accompanied by professional aftercare to candidates who present with vision pathologies during eye tests

Dentistry
- Cleaning and polishing
- Fissure sealants
- Extractions
- Referrals for children with severe dental impairments
