Drivers Wellness Programme
Project Description
The Health Foundation in partnership with the Road Accident Fund (RAF) delivers the groundbreaking Drivers Wellness Programme.
Through the programme, drivers of vehicles that transport a large number of commuters, like taxis and buses, and freight can access free primary healthcare and eye care, including free prescription glasses if required.
Mobile units (mobiles) deliver these services in all nine provinces in South Africa at locations with high commercial driver volumes, including taxi ranks, bus depots and truck weighbridges.
The mobiles provide drivers with vitals health checks and telemedicine consultations with doctors to ensure timely intervention in severe cases.
Access to health checks and medical consultations also helps drivers to obtain the National Medical Certificates (NMC) and optometry certificates required for their Professional Driving Permits (PrDP) renewal.

Goals/Outcomes
The Drivers Wellness Programme aims to provide free and accessible preventative and remedial health interventions to drivers of large passenger and freight vehicles countrywide.
This active management of drivers’ chronic conditions and visual impairment can decrease the risk of medical events and poor vision that may cause road accidents. The Drivers Wellness Programme is thus a practical measure to reduce the high fatality rate on South African roads.
Partners
The implementation of this initiative, including the manufacture and operational management of mobile units, is conducted in collaboration with The Health Foundation’s implementing partner, Guud Drivers. Guud Drivers offers a turnkey solution, providing tailor-made mobile units based on the Road Accident Fund’s (RAF’s) specifications and requirements.
