Background
As part of the South African Population Research Infrastructure Network (SAPRIN), a new urban Health and Demographic Surveillance Site (HDSS) is being established in Cape Town – the Cape Town Surveillance through Healthcare Action Research Project (C-SHARP). The project is co-ordinated by Western Cape Government Health (WCGH) and is being conducted in partnership with a number of local academic institutions, the City of Cape Town and community NPOs. The initiative seeks to augment routine Community-oriented Primary Care (COPC) projects in two communities to establish ongoing longitudinal population surveillance, in order to address a number of questions related to health and development, in line with the overall SAPRIN objectives.
Objective of this position
Two site managers will be appointed by The Health Foundation and seconded to the Health Intelligence Directorate at WCGH, reporting to the C-SHARP Research Data Manager. One appointee will be appointed for each of the two included communities in the C-SHARP project – Nomzamo and Bishop Lavis. The appointee will be responsible for overall co-ordination of the data collection activities in the COPC sites, ensuring that both COPC and C-SHARP supplementary data needs are met. The appointees will co-report to the relevant WCGH Deputy Director for Comprehensive Health to ensure alignment of service and research activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities will inter alia include:
- Work closely with the C-SHARP central team in Health Intelligence, the local NPOs and the sub-structure health management team to ensure overall data co-ordination and management for the site.
- Assist technically, supporting the NPO digital health officers and team leaders with digital health training, and training and support for consent and supplementary C-SHARP data collection.
- Support the NPO in demarcating service areas and establishing visit schedules to ensure systematic and comprehensive coverage of the entire surveillance area.

Requirements
- Relevant graduate degree in quantitative health or information sciences
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in research or health service data management
- Previous HDSS or COPC experience would be advantageous.
Work arrangement
This is a hands-on interactive position where it is anticipated that the appointees will spend the largest portion of their time working on-site directly with NPO and sub-structure staff. Flexible work arrangements are otherwise negotiable.
